Apple March Event Recap: iPhone 17e Unveiled with MagSafe, 48MP, 256GB from $599
Big upgrades hit Apple’s budget line: the iPhone 17e launches March 11 with MagSafe, huge storage, and a 48MP camera.
If you thought Apple’s budget phones were plateauing, the iPhone 17e just rewrote the rulebook. Announced during Apple’s March 4 “Special Experience” event, this $599 entry into the iPhone 17 family punches way above its weight—with MagSafe wireless charging, a giant leap in camera quality, and base storage doubled at no extra cost.
Core Upgrades: Power, Storage & Display
The startup doesn’t cut corners: the iPhone 17e is powered by Apple’s A19 chip, the same 3-nanometer processor that drives the higher-end 17 lineup. Alongside it runs the new C1X modem, delivering roughly twice the speed of the older C1 while also conserving power. Solid upgrades where it matters most.
Every base model now starts with 256 GB of storage—twice what last year’s 16e offered—while a 512 GB variant is available for power users. The display remains a 6.1-inch OLED panel, preserving the 60 Hz refresh rate, but Apple has added a tougher new front glass: Ceramic Shield 2, designed to reduce screen glare and resist scratches even better than before.
Camera & Design: Sharp, Stylish & Finally Magnetic
Photography gets serious on the 17e. The rear camera now sports a 48-megapixel Fusion sensor with optical qualities and a 2× telephoto mode, while computational photography improvements enable expanded Portrait modes that intelligently detect depth for people, pets, and even background blur with finesse. The front camera steps up too, now at 18 MP, with a wider field of view and rumored Center Stage support—a first in the “e” line.
One long-standing complaint has been addressed: MagSafe. The iPhone 17e adds magnetic wireless charging (with Qi2 compatibility), bringing full MagSafe accessory support and stronger attachment for charging. The design includes IP68 resistance, space for satellite messaging and crash detection features, and new color options in black, white, and a soft pink tone.
Price, Availability & the Bigger Product Line
Preorders for the iPhone 17e begin March 4, 2026, with general availability rolling out on March 11. It launches at $599 in the US for the 256 GB base model. That pricing mirrors the 16e’s entry point—yet delivers much more value.
At the same event, Apple also refreshed the iPad Air line. Now powered by the new M4 chip, the 11-inch model starts at $599 (Wi-Fi), and the 13-inch variant at $799, both available in the same color palette and launching alongside the 17e in the second week of March. The upgrades highlight Apple’s strategy to push high-end performance and connectivity—like Wi-Fi 7 and more RAM—into midrange product tiers without raising prices.
Where the Trade-offs Still Show
Even with all the gains, the 17e makes some concessions to hit its price target. The screen still refreshes at 60 Hz, not ProMotion or the higher refresh rates of the Pro line. There’s still only one rear camera in play, no ultra-wide lens. While wired charging speed is solid, it’s not class-leading. And though MagSafe has come, wireless speeds lean toward 25 W rather than the fastest on the market.
For users upgrading from the 16e or earlier entry models, though, these changes feel substantial—storage, MagSafe, and camera improve across the board, plus the faster modem and chip set the stage for more years of support.
Bottom line
With the iPhone 17e, Apple has narrowed the gap between mid-tier and flagship, delivering essential upgrades that resolve many of the 16e’s core limitations. At $599 with MagSafe finally onboard, the 17e isn’t just Apple’s smartest budget move—it may be its most meaningful in years.
